-More than 419,000 cases of skin cancer in the US each year are linked to indoor tanning including about 245,000 basal cell carcinomas, 168,000 squamous cell carcinomas, and 6,200 melanomas.
-More people develop skin cancer because of tanning than develop lung cancer because of smoking
-Of melanoma cases among 18-to-29-year-olds who had tanned indoors, 76 percent were attributable to tanning bed use
-Use of the tanning beds before age 35 boosted the risk of melanoma by 75%
-The American Academy of Dermatology cites an alarming statistic that one American dies of melanoma every hour.
-The International Agency for Research on Cancer, an affiliate of the World Health Organization, includes ultraviolet (UV) tanning devices in its Group 1, a list of the most dangerous cancer-causing substances.
-Individuals who have used tanning beds 10 or more times in their lives have a 34 percent increased risk of developing melanoma compared to those who have never used tanning beds.
-Both the American Cancer Society and the Skin Cancer Foundation tell us that the first exposure to tanning beds in youth increases melanoma risk by 75 percent.
-Melanoma is now considered to be the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults 15-29 years old.
-The evidence that indoor tanning dramatically increases your risk of getting skin cancer is so strong that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires warning labels on all indoor tanning equipment.
-By choosing not to tan, you reduce your risk of getting many types of skin cancer, including melanoma.
-The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that if no one younger than 18 years of age ever used a tanning bed, we could prevent about 61,839 melanomas and 6,735 deaths due to melanoma

Myth: Myth #6: You need a tan to feel and look beautiful.

This is definitely an image perpetuated by the tanning industry which has many young women becoming addicted to tanning. The consequence is that young women who believe that they have to tan in order to be beautiful are now developing deadly melanomas at an early age. It is time to let people know that tanned skin does not equate with beauty. Tanned skin means you have sun damaged skin which is more prone to aging and wrinkles, not to mention skin cancer.
