London's FTSE 100 fell below the 5,000 level for the first time since October 1998, dropping 2.4 percent, or 123.5 points, to 4,946.8. More than $50 billion was wiped off the value of the index.

The CAC 40 blue chip index in Paris lost 2.6, or 113.05 points, to hit 4,300.46, while Frankfurt's Xetra Dax slumped 2.6 percent, or 121.57 points, to 4,609.10.

British Airways (BAY), Europe's biggest airline, fell nearly 3 percent. The company denied a weekend report that its was about to axe 8,000 jobs as it battles to remain profitable.

Volkswagen (FVOW), Europe's biggest automaker, dipped 3.5 percent

In Amsterdam, the AEX index dropped 2.6 percent and the SMI in Zurich was 3.6 percent lower. Milan's MIB30 index dipped 2.1 percent.

The S&P 500, whose market value accounts for about 75 percent of all U.S. equities, fell 20.62 points, or 1.9 percent, to 1,085.78, its lowest since October 28, 1998,

The Dow Jones industrials average tumbled 234.99, or 2.4 percent, to 9,605.85, while the Nasdaq composite declined 17.94, or 1 percent, to 1,687.70, widening its weekly losses to 6.5 percent.
